What Is Girls Rock Camp Austin?

Girls Rock Camp Austin is a summer day camp that offers musical instruction as well as a variety of workshops and performances in a positive, all-female environment intended to give girls the tools to succeed in music-related ventures, as well as in other fields of their choosing. The camp creates leadership opportunities, cultivates a supportive community of peers and mentors and encourages social change and the development of life skills.

Campers learn to play instruments of their choosing (guitars, drums, bass, keyboards, or vocals), form bands, write songs and perform live at a showcase at the end of the camp. They also attend workshops on women who rock, self-defense, images of girls and women in popular culture, the music business, rock writing and zine-making and more.

Girls Rock Camp Austin 2008

Girls Rock Camp had an amazing summer. We quadrupled our size, serving more than 100 girls (half of them on scholarship) in two incredible one-week sessions held at the Ann Richards School. Rock & roll legend Rosie Flores was back to teach and wow the girls with her lunchtime performances, along with Follow That Bird!, Akina Adderly, Belaire, Amy Cook, the Octopus Project, LZ Love, Ume, and many other wildly talented ladies, including platoons of volunteers. Girls learned about zine- and poster-making, history of women who rock, the music business, and much more in a number of workshops and panels. Their brand-new bands brought the house down with sold-out showcases at the Parish, where we also held successful silent auctions featuring donations from myriad music legends, including Heart, Loretta Lynn, and the Donnas.

Girls Rock Camp Austin also hosted its first Ladies Rock Camp, a weekend-long fundraiser for women who want to support camp and rock like the girls do. Generously hosted by the Griffin and Sri Atmananda schools, the camp was a packed weekend of learning, performing, sharing, and fun, culminating in a rocking showcase at Creekside Lounge. We rocked First Night Austin with our amazing marching rock band, got down at the Girls Rock Camp Alliance conference (held in Austin this year), and threw in a couple of karaoke parties along the way.

Now, of course, it's full speed ahead to Girls and Ladies Rock Camps 2009. Hope you can join us!
